What Is Palm Muting?

Palm muting is a technique where you lightly rest the side of your picking hand (not the actual palm) on the strings while playing. This dampens the sound, creating a muted, rhythmic effect. While it might feel a little awkward at first, don’t worry—once you get used to it, it becomes second nature.

Getting Started with Palm Muting

• Hand Placement: Rest the side of your picking hand on the thicker strings while you pick. This can be done on open strings or while playing chords.

• Experiment with Positioning: The placement of your hand on the strings greatly affects the tone.
• Closer to the bridge: Produces a deeper, booming effect, often referred to as the “chug” when using distortion.
• Further from the bridge: Results in a thinner, softer sound with less low-end resonance.
• Start Simple: Try palm muting on the low E string first, whether you're using distortion or a clean tone. Get comfortable with how different placements affect the sound.

Finding Your Sound

If you're looking for that heavy, chugging tone, keep your palm closer to the bridge—but not too far back, or you'll lose the effect. Experiment with different positions until you find the sweet spot that suits your playing style.
