Creating Complex Picking Patterns
Have you ever not learned one because it seems too complex...
Did you ever wonder how complex picking patterns are created?...
Not all, but most complex patterns are created this way...
Today’s article is about combining simple individual picking patterns to make a longer complex pattern. We’ll start by using four easy but different picking patterns that, when strung together, will create a longer, more complex, and interesting sound.
For this example, we will use part of the G major chord but only play strings one, two, three, and four for each of the patterns.
Picking Pattern 1: Play the strings in this order; four, three, two, and then one.
Picking Pattern 2: Play the strings in this different order; four, two, three, and finally one.
Picking Pattern 3: Play the strings in yet another order; four, one, three, and lastly two.
Picking Pattern 4: Play the strings in this final order; four, one, two, and then three.
Practice each of the picking patterns enough so that you are comfortable with each individual pattern.
Once you can confidently play each of the four patterns, then put them all together and play each pattern one time consecutively in the above pattern order. Now you have a more extended and more complex-sounding picking pattern just by putting these four simple patterns together!
You can create your own picking patterns and combine them for cool-sounding, long, complex patterns. Experiment with various chords and sounds to see what you can come up with. Or use these four in a different order or even the same order to see how it sounds with a variety of chord shapes.
